Questions about buying wedding rings...?
The wedding is the first weekend of February, so we probably need to start shopping for wedding rings soon. I have a few questions:
1. Are the rings in jewelry stores samples that you try on and then order (like wedding dresses), or are the rings in the shop available for purchase?
2. If you have to order rings, approximately how long does it take for them to arrive?
3. How long does it take to have a ring sized, and how much can the ring be sized without damaging it? I have unusually slender fingers (size 4).
4. Any other tips on ring shopping? Neither one of us knows anything about how to buy jewelry!
Oh - we're just looking for wedding bands. Instead of an engagement ring, I have a beautiful chain and pendant.

Mickey - your ring is beautiful. That's similar to what I had in mind 
Most of the time, you buy the ring right out of the display case. Some rings don't re-size well and you will need to order them. Given that you were quite a small size, that may the case for you.
Rings that don't re-size well are those with engraved patterns or edging. The lovely one in Mickey's picture would be one that wouldn't re-size well.
You'll find the staff in quality jewellery stores to be quite helpful.
Your question isn't clear about whether or not you want matching rings. Keep in mind that it might not be possible. Wedding bands comes in widths starting at 3 mm and going to 8 mm. Most common widths are 5 and 6 mm. You'd be surprised how much of a different 1 millimeter can make.
You might find that your hand is better suited to a narrow band and his to a wider band, or vice versa. If so, exactly matching bands might not be possilbe.
As well, your hand might better suit a more rounded look while his takes a more flat looking ring better. Again, it could be vice versa. Try not to get your heart set on matching bands because you will each spend more of your time apart from each other than looking at both rings together. You'll want the rings to look good on both of you.
Go to a store and see what each of you like, and try them on. Even if you have to put it on a different finger, you'll still get an idea of how the ring will look on your hands.
If you are thinking of gold, anything higher than 18K is probably too high of a gold content for everyday wear. Gold is a very soft metal (heavy as all get out, but soft) and anything higher than 18K is prone to getting out of shape.
Pure gold is 24 K (karats) so 18K is 75% pure gold. That applies whether you get yellow, white or pink gold.
Also consider whether either or both of you want diamonds or other stones on your rings.
You have a tone of choices. Don't let yourself get overwhelmed by the variety. Once in a store, you'll quickly get a sense of what you like and what suits you.
