How I Started The Stainless Steel Ring Fashion -Kinda
You've seen them. You may even own one. You may have seen one and mistaken it for silver. I'm talking about the stainless steel ring and I'm proud to say I started that fashion. Well actually I don't know if I started it but nobody else had one when I had my wife's made.
Shortly before I got married my intended informs me she is allergic to most metals because of the alloys in them. I don't know jewelry from squat so I'm thinking she's asking for a pure gold 24 carat wedding band. Guess what. They don't make those because they're too soft. They have to add an alloy to make them a functional piece of jewelry. But I found a jeweler who looked at my blank face and the cash in my money clip and made me one.
The morning after the wedding night the ring was shaped like an egg with a dent in it. Gold really is soft. Obviously this expensive little bauble was not going to last. So now I'm faced with finding another metal that won't create an allergic reaction and that won't fold up like a cheap tent. So who do you see to help you find a solution? Your ex-girlfriend of course.
After we got the "I told you so" out of the way she had the solution. She was dating a guy that owned a van conversion shop and she swore he could make anything. I gave her the dimensions of the ring and hoped for the best. Four days later she gave me an absolutely beautiful silver band except it wasn't silver. Her boyfriend had cut the ring from a length of stainless steel tubing and beveled the edges. How he sized it I haven't a clue. Then I noticed that my ex-girlfriend was sporting an identical ring with matching loop earrings. Apparently her boyfriend was pleased with his new found skill as a jeweler he created rings for everybody in his shop.
Well to make the story shorter, my wife loved it. It had a distinctive look, was lightweight and wouldn't cause her skin to turn green. And trust me, stainless steel is not going to bend or get dents and dings. She was so pleased with the ring she bragged to her friends and suddenly we had orders for more. So that was the start of the stainless steel ring fashion in Alexandria, VA.
OK maybe it didn't really start that business but stainless steel rings are hugely popular today. Unlike the guy who ran the van customization shop, real jewelers can do real wonders with the finish, etching, embedding and generally making these rings beautiful. Not only beautiful and durable but extremely affordable. If you're in the market for a casual or formal ring, you really ought to look at a stainless steel ring.
