advice from a jeweler: would this be a bad investment? what's the best diamond simulate- a diamonique?
I obviously cant ask a jewler this in person because they'll probably try to talk me into wanting a real diamond...
i'm looking at engagement rings with my soon to be fiance. i dont want a diamond. they are beautiful but after seeing all those documentaries about blood diamonds, I see red when others see bling. I'm not oppossed to a diamond simulant though. is there a better diamond simulant than Diamonique? if so what? i have heard of mosanites. my mother has a mosanite ring (i'mnot sure she even realizes that Masonite is a diamond simulate and *not* a designer). its nice but it has a yellow tinge to it. I want something nicer if possible. Also, do you think its a bad investment to get a really expensive setting from a great jeweler with the best materials (i.e platinum) just to mount it with a diamond simulate? if so, why? is it because the simulate will never last as long as a real diamond? am i better off getting a white sapphire or something?
Actually, moissanite is a lab-created gemstone and not a diamond simulant...while most can't tell it from a diamond simply due to a lack of knowledge, moissanite really looks very little like a diamond and the high brilliance and fire should give it away every time. Not to mention the very obvious double refraction. Don't judge every moissanite off your mother's either, there have been vast improvements made and your moissanite today looks better than your moissanite of 2007 and far better than your moissanite of 2004.
Diamonique and all the others are branded cubic zirconias, some better than others. Cubic Zirconia is considered a diamond simulant and will trick most everyone, including jewellers, until they bring out a diamond tester. You can get low grade CZ for pennies which might last a year before it clouds over, and high-grade CZ which you hope will last your lifetime, but constant wear will have an effect on its appearance.
I think it's a great idea to get a quality setting no matter the stone you're placing in it. Why? Because you want a quality setting and that's the only reason you need. There's no rule the setting and stone have to be of a comparable cost. Besides, a cheap setting says 'fake'. If you don't want people to question your stone, a cheap setting will have that exact effect.
You can also consider other gemstones, coloured or colourless. If you want colourless, all the following come in 'white': sapphire, tourmaline, beryl, spinel, zircon and quartz. If you want colour, sapphires come in a variety of colours and are very strong and durable, almost as hard as moissanite and diamond.
To me, moissanite is the best diamond alternative. I like a colourless stone that is durable to last my lifetime and with brilliant sparkle, and moissanite offers all of the above at an affordable price. Consider what factors matter to you and go from there.

The Color, Simulated diamonds are D in the color scale. Diamonds that are D in color is extremely rare because it is the highest color grade.
Clarity, simulated diamonds are very clear they have no inclusions, it is rare to find a diamond that has no inclusions and not to mention very pricey.
Last on the list would be the carat weight…..that is self explanatory, the bigger the diamond the more expensive however, simulated diamonds are a fraction of the price.
To women, the bigger the sparkle, the better. Simulated diamonds are what a perfect diamond should be. The fashion trend of today is that of big colorful jewelry with a lot of brilliance. Channel has launched its blue collection for the year with a lot of accessories; the most popular colors are the blue shade of blue sapphire and aquamarine.
