invisible engagement rings?

has anyone ever heard of engagement rings that are somehow set into your skin so all u can see is the diamond ...it like screws into the thing set in your finger or something??? idk i was told about it once i was wondering if anyone else had or if anyone had pictures

they are called microdermal implants, and are a semi-permanent, single-point piercing.

it is generally a two-part piece (although some are solid, which means you cannot change the jewel on the end!), consisting of a foot with 0-3 holes in it (depending on the jewelry maker) and an internally threaded head which you can change the end piece on if you choose to after it is fully healed.

the gauge (thickness of the post) as well as the rise (how long the post is) of the jewelry used varies by each person's anatomy as well as the part of the body that you will be implanting it (and also personal preference). generally, a microdermal is done with a 14g post with a 3/16" rise.

first off, this should ONLY be performed by an experienced professional piercer in a sterile shop.
but in order to help you make an educated decision, this is how it's done: the piercer will "tent" the skin (pinch it upward to create a ridge) and use a dermal punch or a piercing needle (depending on their technique preference) to create a hole straight down in the skin tissue. they will then taper a pocket in the tissue for the jewelry to sit in and then insert the jewelry into it, by placing the longer foot into its pocket and then popping the other side in.

microdermals heal fairly quickly if they are well taken care of. many people ask "how does it stay in?!" well, during the healing process, while your skin tissue is reforming, the tissue will grow through the holes in the foot of the jewelry, securing it in place... therefore, this should be regarded as a PERMANENT body modification. they can be removed (by the same piercer, or another piercing professional) by re-separating the skin tissue and popping them out, but it is uncomfortable and will leave a scar.

now that you are informed about them in general, let's focus on your "engagement ring" microdermal. you will be hard-pressed to find a good piercer who will do this on your hand, and if you do find one, the chances of it healing properly are slim to none. as humans, we use our hands for everything. they are one of the dirtiest places on our bodies. you also won't be able to put your hand in your jeans pockets, you need to be careful of running your fingers through your hair so it doesn't get caught, you must be sure not to bump it on tables/chairs/doorways/your leg/other people/or anything at all...... starting to get the picture? although they are lovely, the hand is not a practical place for this type of piercing. if microdermals are something that interests you, please research further, explore your other options, and maybe choose a better-suited location on your body to get one. good luck!
